1 dead, 2 missing in Ontario after being swept away in heavy rains
Saskatoon Police are asking for the public’s help finding two people who went missing in the city after heavy rains last weekend.
An 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl were reported missing Saturday evening after they left a downtown Saskatoon bar and were never seen.
Two people died when they ventured out in heavy rain on Friday morning, a day after a man was swept away by floodwaters in Saskatoon.
“This is a devastating tragedy that has happened to two young people and their families,” said Saskatoon police in a news release on Friday evening.
Police say the man died in hospital on Friday, while his 17-year-old girlfriend is missing and the police investigation is ongoing.
Police say the two people were last seen in a vehicle in the downtown core on Friday evening, but the driver’s whereabouts are unknown.
It’s not clear exactly what conditions led to the man being swept away in floodwaters, but at the time of writing the rain is still falling heavily in Saskatoon.
“This is the worst flood in Saskatoon history,” said police.
“Our sincere thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s families and the friends and family of the people who are missing.”
Police issued an additional search and rescue alert at around 10 p.m. Friday, asking for the public’s help finding the two people, and offering a $2,000 reward.
“The public is asked to contact the Saskatoon Police Service, Crime Stoppers, or CrimeStopSaskatoon.com for more information about this search,” the police release states.
