San Francisco launches guaranteed income program for transgender residents
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — City officials say they’ll provide $25,000 in guaranteed income to 10 transgender men and women over the next few years.
Transgender residents will be eligible for up to 55 percent of their income, while local residents will receive up to 55 percent of their incomes, said Supervisor Aaron Peskin in a prepared release.
Peskin said the money will provide residents with a stable source of income. The city’s Office of Employee Fairness is expected to monitor the program’s effectiveness.
San Francisco is one of the first major cities in the country to offer guaranteed income for transgender residents, an estimated 70 cities and counties offer similar programs, according to the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.
Peskin said the program is an effort to provide financial security to residents of San Francisco who are facing the risk of ending up on the street and are in need of a way to support themselves.
The program is the latest in a wave of anti-poverty policies and programs across the country, beginning to take root in the private sector in recent years.
The city’s program is the first in its kind in California.
